REWARDS CREDIT CARDS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES are often an indispensable adjunct to the business entrepreneur's arsenal of tools and strategies for making it through the early phase of feast and famine so typical of new business startups. Possessing the ability to acquire critical supplies and services necessary for business operations, and enjoy up to 5% cash back on each business expense, can sometimes be the financial buffer that allows the start up business concern to not only survive but succeed.

If you're a small business owner exploring your credit card options, consider one of the many rewards credit cards currently offered by several different credit card companies. The advantage of a Master Card, Visa, or American Express credit card with rewards is the ability to charge all of your business expenses on your business rewards card and earn cash or points rewards for every purchase.

When you evaluate an offer for a business credit card with rewards, here are some of the important questions to ask before you apply for a business card:

• Introductory Rate - Is there a special low introductory rate or 0% APR, and if so, for how long does this rate continue? Are there any special requirements, for example, a cap of $3,000 per month in purchases, for keeping this low APR introductory rate for the full term?

• Interest Rate - What is the annual interest percentage rate that kicks in after any special discount introductory rate? Is this interest rate fixed or variable? What are the triggers that might change this interest rate, for example, late payment, transfer balance, etc.?

• Annual Fee - Is there an annual fee, and if so, when is it due and how is it paid? Are there any circumstances under which the annual fee would change, or be increased? What is the guaranteed period of time during which the annual fee remains the same?

• Rewards - What types of rewards are offered, for example, cash back, points, discounts, merchandise? Are there variable percentages of rewards given for particular types of purchases? (For example, if airline tickets are purchased through a particular online travel service, 5% cash back is earned; and for airfare purchased elsewhere, the cash back reward may only be 2% or it may not be available.)

• Cash Back Term - How much cash back do I earn on my purchases? Are there requirements for where and how purchases can be made to earn cash back rewards? Is there a monthly or yearly cap on total cash back bonuses? Are cash back rewards applied directly to my account each month, or are there special procedures for claiming earned cash back rewards?

• Grace Period - What is the grace period for making my monthly payment? What happens if I'm unable to make the entire monthly payment, or if I miss a payment?

• Cash Back Merchants - From which businesses do purchases earn cash back rewards? Do rewards vary depending on whether the purchase is physically completed, or if it is an online purchase?

• Rewards Points Terms and Expiration - Is there a limit on the number of points or rewards that can be earned in any given period? Do rewards or points expire if unclaimed in a certain amount of time?

• Balance Transfer - Does this business rewards card allow balance transfer from one business credit card to another? What are the terms and limitations? How does a balance transfer effect the interest rate?

As you can readily see, there are many important questions to be asked when you are in the process of applying for a credit card for business use. The answers will assist you in making the best comparisons of different business rewards credit card programs and making the most informed decision about which business credit card is best suited for your unique business plan, operations, and anticipated purchasing needs and requirements.
